Unfortunately, language instruction in the modern world is not so refined and doesn’t make it possible for the learners to remember the things they have learned for a relatively long period of time. Within a few days, it appears that the students haven’t learned anything new at all because the teaching methods are not so effective. For the students to retain whatever they have acquired about any modern language, it becomes essential that the instructors should not follow these mistakes.
1.Zooming in but not zooming out
The acquisition of any term, be it a learning strategy or a grammar structure, is a very long and a painstaking process with room for a lot of errors and mistakes. A major obstacle is that human brain has a tendency to forget everything at a relatively faster rate. It can forget 42% of anything only after 20 minutes of memorizing it. After 9 hours, this percentage increases to 64% and crosses 80% right within one week. Hence, instead of short-term planning is better than medium and long-term planning.
2.Lot of emphasis on explicit learning
It is not a good idea to make all the classroom learning explicit. Learning can also be brought about by exposing the learners to a patterned and repetitive input so that they can vividly remember everything which is being professed to them. After a few weeks, the students will eventually catch the usage of a tense because of the repeated discussion and lectures.
3.Relying on single-word teaching
Teaching single words is a lot less effective as compared to teaching in smaller chunks, phrases or sentences. Our brain has the ability to process four words at a time so it is better to make the learning process in chunks comprising of four words. This makes it easier to memorize the usage because less cognitive effort is required to do so. Also, learning in chunks helps in learning according to the usage and avoiding common mistakes.
4.Overloading the students cognitively
If the brains can contain only four items at a time, imagine how hard it would be for the learners or the students to memorize all the information thrown at them at once. A lot of pressure would be on their brains to make the nouns and adjectives match with each other and keep the order right. Thus, teaching in chunks again comes up as a reliable option.
5.Too much reliance on shallow processing
Recalling a lexical term is not a simple function of the brain as there are a lot of associations which are involved in it. The stronger an association is, the longer the information will retain in the long-term memory of the person. Another thing which contributes to retention is the emotional investment of the person during the learning process.
6.Teaching across all the four skills
Learning a new language is spread along four different skills including writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Many instructors don’t realize the importance of incorporating all the skills during the teaching process and thus, their method remains ineffective. The students can also learn effectively if they are taught through all the aspects properly.
7.Listening is badly instructed
One aspect which is never given due importance is listening. It is very badly taught in most of the cases and this causes a problem for the learners or the students to converse properly with the people who are already an expert in speaking the language. Teaching the listening skills are the best test to put the student through if one wants to infer how much of the new language have they actually learned.
8.Not enough focus on creating questions
Oral spontaneity can only be obtained through the creation of communicatively functioning questions but still, it is not given due importance. Students are given long lists of questions and answers to memorize but hardly, they are given an opportunity to create questions by themselves. There should be textbooks and courses dedicated to making the students learn about forming questions and enhancing their command on the language.
People these days do not realize the importance of learning multiple languages although this can prove to be quite fruitful for their own learning, well-being, and career. The focus of the instructors is not on the right track and thus, this leads to the poor learning and memory retention of the students. Hence, avoiding these mistakes can bring a significant change to the learning process.
